ACC/SEC Rankings: Week 5

Following the introduction of the inaugural TigerSwag rankings, we are back with round 2. The standings have been updated following the 5th week of games.  We'll have a few thoughts below the rankings.

Quick reminder of points:

Points are given for wins and losses, and are worth up to eight points, but are inversely related.  If you win, you get the points.  If you lose, you lose the inverse of the points.  For wins:

  • 2 Points - FCS School
  • 4 Points - FBS School not in a BCS conference
  • 6 Points - FBS school in a BCS conference
  • 8 Points - FBS school in the top 4 of their BCS conference
For losses:
  • 8 Points - FCS School
  • 6 Points - FBS School not in a BCS conference
  • 4 Points - FBS school in a BCS conference
  • 2 Points - FBS school in the top 4 of their BCS conference
Also, to account for the performance against an opponent, whether or not a team covered the spread is considered, with an increasing value equal depending on the opponent.  Once again, you cover the spread, you get the points.  You don't cover the spread, you lose the points.
Against the spread points:

  • 1 Points - FCS School
  • 2 Points - FBS School not in a BCS conference
  • 3 Points - FBS school in a BCS conference
  • 4 Points - FBS school in the top 4 of their BCS conference

Ranking Thoughts:

  • Answer to everyone's first question:
    • No, UCS can't get rings for this
  • Answer to everyone's second question:
    • FSU is behind Clemson because they snoozed through USF. If they play any kind of inspired ball, they are third in the overall standings, behind only UCS & FLA.
    • Also, FSU was penalized for Wake since Wake fell from the ranks of the Top 4. Their original win over Wake was worth 12, now only worth 9
  • Speaking of Wake, seeing them in the Top 4 last week was not my proudest moment nor was it the intent of the rankings, but the numbers are what they are.  Duke takes their place, which doesn't make me feel any better
  • UCS takes over the top spot in both leagues as they once again cover the spread against a BCS (for basketball only) team
  • Alabama is now 3rd behind Florida & UCS.  This is due to Bama only covering the spread twice in their five games.  Using the point system, Western Kentucky is the best opponent they've played.
  • ACC had a brutal week last week, with UVA losing to La Tech, GT losing to MTSU, and VT losing to Cinci.  It shows in the per team average, as the ACC dropped nearly a point.
  • The SEC point total increased as they won both out of conference games and played 4 conference games (someone has to get 6 for the win)
  • Combined SEC records of opponents so far for UCS, UGA, FLA, BAMA, & MSST?
    • 1-22 (FLA over TAMU over ARK)
  • Combined ACC records opponents so far for CLEM, MIA, FSU, & DUKE?
    • 6-12
  • Anyone disagree with the rankings leaving LSU out last week?
  • Let's all stand and welcome Duke to the Top 4 of the ACC.  Most think the argument between conferences should end here, but we all know if Vandy was sitting atop the SEC East, the depth of the conference would be celebrated from shore to shore
  • Anyone disagree with Duke being rated above GT, VT, or UNC?  They could climb even higher after playing a woeful UVA team at home.
  • Arkansas & Kentucky are beginning to separate themselves in the race for last.  Too bad they don't get the first pick in next year's recruiting cycle
  • The SEC this week will begin to separate the wheat from the chaff as LSU-FLA & UCS-UGA go at it
  • Snoozefest of the week? AUB-ARK from the SEC and UNC-VT from the ACC
  • BC wins cupcake of the week award.  Army is ranked 2nd to last, ahead of only Idaho (see UNC last week)

  1. Ouch. ACC took a big hit. Scary how bad some of the teams are looking this year.

I assume the ordering of your numbers is backwards in the description of the against the spread points?

    1. Good catch. The ACC did not have its best week, for sure. I'm interested to see how things shake out now that the SEC begins to pit their upper level teams against each other.
